hot dish: new on the atlanta food scene

Chef Kevin Gillespie’s much anticipated Cold Beer is now open along the Beltline next to the Edgewood bridge in the Edge mixed-used development. With an airy bar, a revolving menu of small plates, picnic tables, and what Gillespie describes as European café-vibe seating, Cold Beer is a fun spot to grab some friends and well… a cold beer.

The 7000 square foot space has a large first come, first served patio and indoor dining room that accepts reservations via Resy. A rooftop deck will be unveiled soon. Chef Brian Baxter formerly of Nashville’s Husk and Bastion helms the kitchen. Beverage Director Mercedes O’Brien (Gunshow) crafts the 15 drink seasonal cocktail menu.

Standouts right now include smoked and fried chicken wings and charred corn with crab nduja and African blue basil. O’Brien’s aperitif Endless Layers of Summer is a refreshing mix of elderflower, Alpine spirits, lemon verbena, basil seeds, and a tri-melon mezcal cube.

Gillespie said in a release, “Every day at Cold Beer should feel like a party.”

Wine down on Wednesdays at Murphy’s in Virginia Highland. It’s not only a fun date idea but also a way to try new wines (which can be purchased in the wine shop). A charcuterie board comes laden with three meats, pickled vegetables, whole-grain mustard, and grilled bread. A flight of three wines accompanies the selection. It’s a steal at $30 and the board or flight can be purchased separately for $15.

Buckhead’s Aria also has a new wine tasting experience available Monday through Friday in the bar or lounge area. Chef Gerry Klaskala prepares four bites to go with sommelier Andres Loaiza’s selection of four wines. Reservations for the $45 tasting can be made via Resy. Perhaps end the meal with seasonal fresh sorbets served with meringue.

Donetto in Westside has a new happy hour from 5-7 pm Monday through Friday. A special menu of $10 bites and half priced pizzas complements specially priced cocktails and wine selections. Choose from cacao e pepe, bruschetta with hazlenuts and truffle honey, or fried pork belly with whipped ricotta. Bonus: all by-the-glass bottles of wine are half price. Sounds like the perfect patio hang.
