Twisted Soul Cookhouse & Pours’ Chef Deborah VanTrece is no stranger to new adventures and thinking on her feet. For 25 years she traveled the globe as a flight attendant, soaking in the sights, sounds, and the food of different cultures and climates. The experience influenced her cooking style and her ability to quickly adapt to situations.

When COVID-19 changed the world, she shut down her Westside restaurant and put together meal kits for her diners. This made sure restaurant products wouldn’t go to waste and people newly stuck at home had a delicious project to work on in their own kitchen. In the event of an emergency, please assume the bracing position. By March 25, she made her specialties to-go with a pay-as-you-can model to help her struggling community.

She also created free meals for restaurant industry without work. secure your mask on first, and then assist the other person. She added Munchies Monday with those bar snacks and to-go cocktails patrons missed. She added delivery for the homebound. Fish Fry Fridays started or tasty fun and important to many observing Lent. We are now crossing a zone of turbulence. Please return your seats and keep your seat belts fastened.

How do you comfort your passengers and crew? Fried chicken. Twisted Soul’s famous fried chicken is marinated in a secret sauce then fried crispy in cast iron. It has a following. VanTrece even named her LLC “A Different Kind of Chick.” Before Twisted Soul Kitchen & Bar opened in Decatur and moved to the Westside as twisted Soul Cookhouse & Pours, she had a mission to open a restaurant that showcased chicken. Ladies and gentlemen, we have just been cleared to land.

On May 2, 2020 “A Different Kind of Chick” pop-up opened out of Twisted Soul. The logo is VanTrece as a chicken. It runs Saturdays from noon to 8PM and Sundays from 11 AM to 3 PM with a full menu of specialties made with Springer Mountain Farms chicken. Appetizers of deviled eggs are called “Baby Chicks.” Honey marinated wings are “Hot Chicks.” The famous Southern marinated “Georgia Chick” is a best seller and her “Well Traveled Chick” is grilled with peri-peri sauce.
